NIGERIAN DEMOCRACY STILL GASPING FOR BREATH IN THE 21 CENTURY
Every 29 May Nigerians all over the world are expected to by virtue of the love for their Country not only be jubilant but ask some pertinent questions to themselves about the status of the Democracy and its principles in their Country. What is the Democratic health status of our dear Country? How is our Country Nigeria faring? Are we growing as a people bound together by Providence, a people who ordinarily would have been in their separate ways but brought together by transcendental Providence? Are we happy together as a people? All these and many more should be the concentration and the concern of a true Nigerian who cares about the well-being of the Country.
Many years down the line after the advent of the almighty Democracy into our political space, I make bold to say that Nigeria is still gasping for air even though it exists in an air free trade zone in the world geographical space. Since 1999, our Democracy is still suffering harassment from our leaders most of which are rather karkistocratic instead of being democratic in their style of governance.
During our independence in 1960, we were told that our Country had an omnibus of latent potentials that can take the Country through the path of development, by now we would have been seeing our Country as an enviable place of residence, an Eldorado to the envy of foreigners, but many years down the line, the reveres is still the case. Corruption is still rearing its ugly head in the nation politic, blood letting here and there, now and then, pogrom and wistful killing in all the nooks and crannies of our dear Country.
Funny enough, our Democracy has depreciated after so many wasted years of building, the worst just set in recently where freedom of speech is now obnoxious and an abomination to the so called authorities. This fact is buttressed by the saying in vogue credited to one of the revered law makers, which has also become a song in everyone's lips "if I say the truth I die, If I don't I will still die, so I have chosen to say the truth and die". This is how pathetic our situation has become, pathetic because he is actually suffering the effects of saying the truth after the prediction. Our Democratic fabric seems to have been torn to dregs that even a mythical tailor cannot mend.
The question is, how did we get here? Nigeria is naturally blessed with mineral resources, Nigerians are hardworking, most of the most successful people in the world are Nigerians. When Nigerians leave the shores of this Country majority of them excel out there, but why can they excel in their own abode? Is it mysterious? why can't we unravel the uncanny situation of our dear Country? All these questions beg your sincere answers. We need to work hard to make our Country salubrious, rewarding and lucrative.
Democracy everywhere is not invariably without inherent principles, it makes provision for omnifarious freedom such as freedom of speech, of association, of religion, of movement and even supremacy of the constitution. But in Nigeria we take pleasure in making mockery of these core values of Democracy thereby inflicting harmonious substances on the air and causing it to gasp for breath of life.
Today is another Democracy day, I don't want to bore you with too much words, the point is, let's save our Democracy before it becomes too late. Let's vote in leaders who are ready to uphold the tenets of our Democracy in this Country. It is hard because we, especially we the youths have been introduced to abusing our values as a people and since we are indurate to that syndrome, we keep replicating negativity as soon as we are in power. What Democratic cum Political future are we designing for our children? The time has come where the youths will prove them wrong, those who think they are lazy.
Let's come together and save our Country by promoting the principles of Democracy. Happy Democracy Day.
